Interview with Scout Taylor Compton, Star of Rob Zombie’s Halloween I and II and the Runaways

Despite being just 21 years old, Scout Taylor Compton has a pretty impressive resume. She mostly played Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie’s Halloween I & II. She also played Lita Ford in 2009’s The Runaways, starring Kristen Stewart & Dakota Fanning, and starring in various sitcoms including Ally McBeal, ER, Frasier, and Gilmore Girls. Scout is as unpretentious as they come, which is always welcome when interviewing. The following was performed on October 16, 2010, while Scout was on hiatus during his appearance at the 2010 Rock And Shock Fest in Worcester, Ma.

Scout Taylor Compton Interview

TIS: So you’re a drummer? Can you tell me what this interesting thing is?

STC: For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a fan of 80’s rock and my parents were really big music fans too. I tried the guitar but I was not good at all and enjoyed the movement of drumming, I also wanted to be a rock star since I was young, that was my inspiration.

TIS: What kind of kit do you play?

STC: I’m playing the Red Pearl kit. She is so beautiful and my baby and I love her so much.

TIS: Do you teach yourself or do you take lessons?

STC: I read tabs. I wish I was one of the people who can get it, but I’m not that talented. But I’m learning and actually had to get a guitar for my role as Lita Ford in The Runaways so it helped me get really good at reading tabs on instruments in multiple tabs, it’s so much easier than reading sheet music

TIS: And did you record some of the things you sing about?

STC: Yes.

TIS: How’s it going? Any tag interest?

STC: I actually started a new band called Rose Red, which really excites me. Some kind of punk band. It’s still somewhat experimental, so it’s hard to say anything about the tags for now.

TIS: So you worked with Lita (Ford) on your role in The Runaways?

ST: No. Lita actually had nothing to do with The Runaways. I met him after I finished the movie. Actually, he called me once at a convention. She called me and invited me to watch one of her shows, and I’ve had three or four likes since then. He’s totally awesome and I love him so much. I’ve been very blessed.

TIS: Who are you currently interested in musically?

STC: Wow. This is really bad, but I’m super obsessed with “Whip My Hair” by Willow Smith. did you hear him?

TIS: Um, I don’t even know who Willow Smith is.

STC: Ah, that’s dance music. I also like Automatic Love Letter, Alkaline Trio and many indie bands. I also like Gary Jules. I also love jazz. Really diverse stuff.

TIS: I had an interview with Danny Trejo yesterday where he talked about some Hollywood actors who grew up in this business and have lost their modesty. You don’t seem to have fallen into this trap yet. Is this something you are consciously aware of?

STC: Yeah, I don’t know. I don’t want to change myself for anyone or anything in my life. I want to be treated, how I want to be treated. For example, I just met Taylor Momsen of Gossip Girl, who started a band, and she was very rude. I want to be treated with respect and I’m trying to give that back. I try to keep people who don’t care about everything around me and I think that reflects on me as well.

TIS: Yeah, Danny said something very similar about keeping his friends around him in line.

STC: Yes, it really matters if you care about that kind of thing, which I do too.

TIS: So what is this I’ve heard about Halloween 3D? Did Rob sign for it, or is Dimension just milking the cash cow?

STC: It’s not a rumor and Rob isn’t going to do it.

TIS: Wow, so Dimension is really trying to get him there?

STC: Yes, they are. They came to me with an offer but they don’t have a script yet, so I’m at least waiting for that before deciding what to do. Still, I think there’s a good chance they’ll screw it up completely. I’ve heard that they can totally reject everything Rob has done in his two movies, which is ridiculous and I don’t want to be a part of it. I support Rob and all of our hard work, Danielle, myself, Tyler and everyone involved. It’s ridiculous that they deleted everything we did with these two movies.

TIS: So they want Tyler (Mane) to reprise the role of Michael Myers in 3D?

STC: Yes. In fact, they offered it to him. I know Tyler wants to do this, but I really don’t know if I want to. I really need to read the script and decide for myself.

TIS: Yes, immediately. Have you spoken to Jamie Lee Curtis since you shot the Halloween reshoots where you play Laurie Strode?

STC: No, I’ve never spoken to him. I would really like to know what he thinks of my performance, but I haven’t had a chance to talk to him about it.

TIS: Do you have any thoughts about God? Who or what is he?

STC: I am an Atheist.

TIS: Exactly. What led you to this conclusion?

STC: I’ve studied so hard that I want to know everything before making a decision and I don’t believe it. do you believe in god

TIS: I do, but it’s not the traditional, dogmatic mentality that is popular in today’s society. I also really like Eastern philosophy and metaphysics.

STC: Sounds good. It’s very calming.

TIS: Yes, at least I think so. So if I asked you what was the best day of your life, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?

STC: Best day of my life?

TIS: Yes, I know it’s hard.

STC: Yeah, oh man. Probably the best four days of my life was when I took a road trip with Kristin Stewart (The Runaways, Twilight) and took a road trip from Los Angeles to Ohio to see Rob (Zombie) perform. It was an overall incredible experience for me.

TIS: Sounds great. Thank you for your time and good luck with Halloween 3D if you decide to do it.

ST: Great. Thanks for your time.
