Ultra Sound Procedure and Types

Ultrasound is a medical procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to examine the internal organs of a patient but is mostly done for pregnant women. Scans the female pelvic cavity and abdomen to create a picture of the fetus and placenta. Sonogram and ultrasound are different terms, but are commonly used interchangeably to refer to the same exam. Detects any malfunction, abnormality or defect related to the fetus. These are often used in conjunction with other tests to confirm the diagnosis.

Why Ultra sound

It is very important to have a scan every three months during pregnancy. Because it is nearly impossible to observe the position, condition, and other factors of the fetus in the womb, scanning makes the examination clearer to find any abnormalities. The gynecologist can thus treat any complications before they become serious. Therefore, it can be easily said that ultra sound is a necessity in every pregnancy only under the supervision of a specialist.

What is the procedure?

Ultrasound is performed by applying gel to the abdomen. This works as a conductor for sound waves and allows them to penetrate inside. The specialist then uses a device to generate sound waves into the woman’s uterus. These waves bounce back tissues and bones back into that device, creating black and white images of the fetus developing within.


Seven different ultra sound tests are performed. The basic process remains the same in all species. A brief description of each is given below:

Standard Ultrasound

It uses a device on the abdomen to create two-dimensional (2-D) images of the fetus developing inside.

Advanced Ultra Audio

This test is similar to the standard test but is performed using more equipment to target a suspected problem by the attending physician.

3D Ultrasound

As the name suggests, it gives three-dimensional images of the fetus in the womb. With the help of probes and software specially designed for this purpose, the process is completed.

Dynamic 3D Ultra sound

Also known as 4-D, it is more advanced and clearer than 2 or 3D images. There are scanning machines specially designed for this. It is taken in the last period of pregnancy to observe the baby’s face and movement before birth.

Trans vaginal Scans

Probe transducers are used inside the vagina to create images. It is usually taken during pregnancy, which is at an earlier stage.

Echocardiography (Heart Ultrasound)

Fetal echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to evaluate the anatomy and functioning of the baby’s heart. It also helps to evaluate any suspected congenital heart defect in the fetus, so it is really important in female reproductive medical procedures. Once a defect is diagnosed, relevant treatment is given along with lifestyle modification and necessary precautions from certain medications, foods, and activities.

Doppler Ultrasound

This procedure actually measures the changes in frequency of ultrasound waves when reflected from moving objects. This imaging examines blood cells.

Gynecologists recommend when and what type of screening is necessary to make an accurate diagnosis of any complex condition.
